Launched in 2022, Dill Dinkers has quickly become a recognized name in pickleball, providing enthusiasts with state-of-the-art indoor facilities that foster community and skill development. Rachel Chonko, the editor-in-chief of Pickleball Innovators, recently sat down with Will Richards, the CEO and founder of Dill Dinkers, to discuss the brand and what sets it apart in the competitive landscape of pickleball.
A Gap in the Market Inspires a New Venture
Richards’ journey into the world of pickleball began from a personal need. “In the wintertime when my wife and I started playing … there just wasn’t any courts,” he explained. This scarcity led them to an indoor facility — a converted horse barn — which despite its rudimentary setup, was “completely full with a waiting list.”
The potential for a well-structured indoor pickleball facility was clear. Dill Dinkers was born out of this opportunity, becoming the first indoor pickleball facility in Maryland.
Rapid Expansion Through Franchising
Dill Dinkers’ growth has been swift and strategic. Within a year of opening their first location, the company launched a franchise program. Richard emphasized a unique approach to franchising that eschews traditional brokers, allowing for more direct and efficient expansion. “Since September … we’ll be well over 300 units that are in development,” Will shared, underscoring the robust interest in the franchise.
The Community and Competitive Edge
At its core, Dill Dinkers thrives on community. Dill Dinkers focuses on making pickleball accessible and enjoyable, with a mix of high-level play and community-focused activities. Richards pointed out the balance they strike between membership exclusivity and walk-in availability, which ensures courts are available yet the business remains sustainable.
Strategic Partnerships
Another key to Dill Dinkers’ operational success is its partnerships with companies such as Court Reserve, a reservation system that seamlessly integrates with their franchise model. The brand also has partnerships with JOOLA and pickleball pros such as Collin Johns.
Looking to the Future with Optimism
Richards is optimistic about the future, noting the steady growth in pickleball’s popularity and the increasing shift towards indoor facilities.
He also noted how supportive the pickleball community is in general, among both pickleball consumers and entrepreneurs in the space.
