Recovery Trends and Monetization Strategies for Pickleball Business Owners

In recent years, the concept of recovery has emerged as a key trend within the fitness industry. It’s not just about workouts anymore; recovery modalities are becoming essential for holistic health and performance optimization. 

This shift is particularly relevant for pickleball business owners and operators, who can leverage recovery trends and services to enhance player experience, attract new members and increase revenue. With this in mind, here are recovery insights and lessons from the health club industry that can be applied to pickleball operators. 

Key Recovery Modalities for Pickleball Clubs

As the popularity of pickleball surges, so does the risk of injury. Pickleball-related injuries have been on the rise, with strains, sprains and fractures being among the most commonly reported issues. Recovery practices such as stretching, cryotherapy, percussive therapy and countless others can help mitigate these potential injuries. 

1. Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy has been highlighted by experts as a standout recovery modality. Kevin Yanuskavich, a former executive at Fit Athletic Therapy, pointed out that cryotherapy offers quick sessions that provide significant benefits, making it an attractive option for busy pickleball players. It helps reduce inflammation, relieve pain and enhance muscle recovery.

“There are so many types of recovery modalities, but the No. 1 would probably be cryo,” said Yanuskavich. “This is just based on what we’ve seen in our clubs in terms of the benefits we’re hearing and the testimonials we’re gathering.”

There are a multitude of cryotherapy vendors on the market, including CryoBuilt, a system that uses electricity over nitrogen to achieve sub-zero temperatures. Others include Cryo Innovations and Cryo Science, for example.

2. Hot and Cold Therapy

Beyond cryotherapy, incorporating hot and cold therapy options— such as saunas and cold plunge pools — can offer additional recovery benefits. These therapies are popular for their ability to improve circulation, reduce muscle soreness and promote relaxation.

3. Massage Beds and Percussive Therapy

Devices like massage beds from HydroMassage or Human Touch, and percussive therapy tools — e.g., Theragun — provide accessible and effective means for muscle relaxation and recovery. Gini Grimsley, the director of fitness products at VASA Fitness, emphasized the value of integrating these services into premium membership packages, enhancing the perceived value of the offering.

“We tell prospects if they pay a little bit more, now not only do they get weights and cardio, but they also get our first level of recovery with our HydroMassage beds,” said Grimsely. “It’s more of a value add than an add on.”

4. Stretching and Mobility Services

Guided stretching sessions, foam rolling classes and mobility workshops can be valuable additions to a pickleball center’s offerings. These services help players improve flexibility, prevent injuries and enhance their game performance.

Monetizing Recovery Services

Now that you have a basic overview of the different recovery modalities and offerings that are trending, the next step is identifying how to monetize these services. 

1. Premium Membership Packages

One effective strategy is to bundle recovery services into premium membership tiers. By offering access to amenities like cryotherapy, massage beds and saunas as part of a higher-priced package, operators can increase membership revenues. Grimsley notes this approach not only adds value but also distinguishes the facility from competitors.

2. Pay-Per-Use Options

For members who prefer not to commit to a premium membership, offering pay-per-use options for recovery services can be an attractive alternative. This model allows casual players and visitors to experience the benefits of recovery without a long-term commitment.

3. Special Recovery Programs

Developing specialized recovery programs — such as “Recovery for Pickleball Players” workshops — can attract both existing members and new customers. These programs can educate participants on the importance of recovery and how to use various modalities effectively.

4. Retail Opportunities

Selling recovery-related products — such as foam rollers, massage guns and supplements — can provide an additional revenue stream. These items can be marketed as complementary tools for maintaining recovery routines at home and optimizing pickleball performance.

As recovery continues to gain traction in the fitness industry, pickleball business owners have a unique opportunity to capitalize on this trend. By offering a range of modalities, they can attract a diverse clientele, enhance player experience and boost their bottom line.
